Building an Igloo

by Dan Lawton

“The prevailing wisdom is that winter signifies the end of the camping season and for many campers it does. However, if you’

re a hardcore camper and don’t mind braving the cold, you should consider trying to build an igloo.
Yeah, I know it sounds nuts, and no, I’ve never done it myself, but every year a dedicated group of campers brave the weather and carve out igloos from the snow. Igloos are often much warmer than pitching a tent and are great shelters from wind.

The process takes between 3 and 6 hours and the only tool you’ll need is a snow spade. Check out this igloo guide for a great resource on how to build one. If you’re more of a visual learner then scope out the video below, in which an Inuit father and son build an igloo. Some Inuits can build the structures in as little as 30 minutes.”
