A Camping Primer, Texas-Style

Family camping is a double-faced term.

For some, it evokes memories of balmy afternoons playing hide-and-go-seek amidst towering pines, catching fresh trout in gurgling creeks and roasting S’mores over roaring campfires.

For others, its summons forth dark days of buying expensive camping gear, getting lost on the way to a state park, getting lost at a state park, being unable to set up a tent, unable to start a fire, unable to catch a fish and generally incapable of competently doing anything even remotely outdoorsy.

For many, who are new to the camping scene, there’s an uncertainty about what sort of experience they’ll have outdoors.  That, in addition to the often prohibitively-expensive price of camping gear, prevents many people from going camping.

Enter  a new program in Texas, designed to let first-time campers get a taste of wilderness without having to make a substantial investment.

The Outdoor Family Program, which is conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, provides families with all the camping gear they need (tents, stoves, lanterns and more) for a night in the woods, for only $65.  Additionally,  campers are accompanied by a ranger, who shows them how to use the gear.

A whopping 2,000 families have participated so far and 65% have been back to a park, which is an encouraging sign for Texas wildlife officials, who are trying to attract younger visitors to state parks.

What do you think?  Would you consider doing a family camping outing like the one described if your state offered such a program?  Let us know in the comment section below.
