When going on a camping trip, food is one of the most important things you need to take along. But, since camping takes extra energy, it’s also crucial to take snacks to eat between meals.

Whether you’re going on a long excursion or simply enjoying an overnight stay in the wilderness, the physical demands of camping can really make you hungry. Unfortunately, when you’re out in the wilderness, food requires extra work and takes more time to prepare. That’s why it’s always important to have a variety of snacks available to satisfy your group of campers. Here are a few easy snacks to take on camping trips if you don’t want to use prepared freeze dried foods.

Chips and Dip

S’mores – the classic camping snack

The key to a successful camping snack is its ability to stay edible without refrigeration and preparation. This is why a bag of chips and a store-bought can of dip is a quick and delicious snack. Bags of potato or tortilla chips can be bought at any store and the range of flavors suits different preferences. Though dip is optional, it makes the snack much more filling. Dips, such as cheese dip, bean dip or salsa, usually stay fresh without constant refrigeration. Or, if you’re looking to make your own dip while camping, check out a good recipe here.

Jerky

For the camper who’s looking for a hearty snack, jerky is an excellent option. Jerky is a strip of dried meat marinated in a spicy and salty rub. This snack is high in protein and keeps very well inside sealed plastic bags that prevent moisture from getting in. Beef jerky is available at most stores or you can make it yourself at home before going camping.

Trail Mix

Trail mix is a fantastic snack to take camping, because it offers an assortment of items and flavors. Trail mix easily fits into plastic bags or containers and its high protein content helps maintain your energy while outdoors. Trail mix comes pre-made at most stores or you can make your own with other ingredients. There is almost no limit to what treats and nuts you can add into your own trail mix.

Crackers

Crackers make a good camping snack for all the same reasons chips do. They can be stored effortlessly in camping bags, provide sustenance until your next meal and stay fresh. Not only do crackers come in many different styles, but they can also be eaten with dip or peanut butter.

Dried Fruit

If you’re looking for something a little healthier and high in nutrients, dried fruit is a great way to go. Dried fruit is sold in most stores and, like beef jerky, keeps very well because it’s dehydrated. If you want to mix things up, you can also add dried fruit to your trail mix.

S’mores

Finally, the most iconic of the camping snacks is the s’more. The ingredients required to make a s’more are graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows. Whereas the previous snacks can be eaten without any preparation, s’mores require you to first build a campfire. Once you’ve roasted the marshmallows over the campfire, place it between two crackers and a chocolate bar like a sandwich. No camping trip is complete without a s’more.
